Leading & Ending Diagonals

The wedge-shaped exception to the standard impulse rules

A diagonal is the one motive pattern where Wave 4 overlapping Wave 1 isn't a violation — it's the signature.

It is a five-wave structure
A diagonal is a motive pattern — it moves with the trend and has five waves, just like a normal impulse.

It forms a wedge
A normal impulse runs inside a roughly parallel channel. A diagonal's boundaries converge into a wedge.

Wave 4 may overlap Wave 1
In a normal impulse that overlap breaks the count. In a diagonal it is expected — and helps identify the pattern.

There are two types
A Leading Diagonal appears near the beginning of a move. An Ending Diagonal appears near the end.

The Shortcut: Start or Finish

Both types look similar on a chart. What separates them is where they appear in the larger wave structure.

This is the one thing worth memorising first.

Leading Diagonal

It closes a move. The larger trend may be running out of energy.
Why position, not shape

Wave 1 and Wave A both sit at the start of a structure. Wave 5 and Wave C both sit at the end. That is the entire logic behind which positions are allowed.

What a Diagonal Actually Is

A diagonal is a motive wave. It moves in the direction of the larger trend.

Like a normal impulse, it is built from five waves, labeled (1) to (5).

The difference is the shape. Draw one line through waves (1), (3) and (5). Draw a second line through waves (2) and (4).

In a normal impulse those two lines run roughly parallel. In a diagonal they converge — the channel narrows into a wedge.

That narrowing brings one important consequence, and it is the subject of the next section.

Normal Impulse vs. Diagonal

Both structures below have five waves. Step through the diagram and watch what happens to Wave 4.

Why the Overlap Matters

In a standard impulse, Wave 4 entering Wave 1's price territory normally invalidates the count. The structure has to be re-labeled. Structural rule

In a diagonal, the same overlap is not a violation. It is one of the characteristics that helps identify the pattern in the first place. Structural rule

So the overlap is not a warning sign here. It is evidence.

Read this carefully

“Overlap is expected” does not mean the overlap must be deep or dramatic. It is often modest — Wave 4 simply dips into the price range Wave 1 already covered. A small overlap counts.

The Leading Diagonal

Where it appears: Wave 1 of an impulse, or Wave A of a zigzag. Structural rule

What that means: a larger move may just be starting.

Step through the diagram below. Each step answers a single question.

Typical, not guaranteed

A Leading Diagonal is often followed by a sharp, deep Wave 2 pullback. Treat that as a tendency worth preparing for, not an outcome you can count on. Typical behaviour

What 5-3-5-3-5 Actually Means

Elliott Wave notation like 5-3-5-3-5 looks cryptic until you know what it counts.

The numbers describe how many smaller waves sit inside each of the diagonal's five main waves.

Read them left to right: the first number belongs to Wave (1), the second to Wave (2), and so on.

In short: an Ending Diagonal is uniform — every leg is a three. A Leading Diagonal alternates — five, three, five, three, five.

Advanced note — different Elliott Wave conventions

The 5-3-5-3-5 count for a Leading Diagonal is the classic Elliott/Prechter convention, and it is the one this guide follows throughout.

Some later Elliott Wave literature — for example Neely's NEoWave — also accepts a 3-3-3-3-3 subdivision in the Leading Diagonal position.

For a beginner this debate changes nothing practical: the position, the wedge shape and the Wave 4 / Wave 1 overlap identify the pattern either way. Learn the Prechter count first, and treat the alternative as context you will meet later.

The Ending Diagonal

Where it appears: Wave 5 of an impulse, or Wave C of a correction. Structural rule

What that means: the larger move may be running out of energy.

The diagram follows the same order as the Leading Diagonal, so the two can be compared directly.

Secondary Clues

Three things often accompany an Ending Diagonal. None of them is a structural requirement.

Use these to support a count you already built from structure. They cannot replace it.

Position First, Shape Last

Shape alone does not tell you which diagonal you are looking at. Both types are usually drawn as a contracting wedge.

Work through the evidence in this order.

1 · Position
Decides the type. Wave 1/A points to Leading. Wave 5/C points to Ending. Nothing else can override this.
2 · Subdivision
Confirms the type. 5-3-5-3-5 supports a Leading reading. 3-3-3-3-3 supports an Ending reading.
3 · Shape
Supports the pattern, not the type. A wedge tells you it may be a diagonal. It does not tell you which one.

In practice: Wave 1/A + matching subdivision gives you a Leading candidate. Wave 5/C + matching subdivision gives you an Ending candidate.

Advanced note — expanding variants

Contracting wedges are the common form for both types, and every diagram on this page shows one.

Expanding variants exist too, where the boundary lines diverge instead of converging. They are less common and easier to misread.

The identification logic does not change: position first, subdivision second. An expanding shape does not by itself rule a diagonal in or out.

Do I Have a Diagonal?

A working sequence for an actual chart. Answer them in order.

Do I see five main waves?
If no: it is probably not a diagonal. A diagonal is a motive structure and always has five.

Do the boundaries form a wedge?
If no: be cautious. A roughly parallel channel points to a standard impulse instead.

Does Wave 4 overlap Wave 1?
If yes: that supports the diagonal reading. In a standard impulse the same overlap would break the count.

Where does the structure sit?
Wave 1 or A → Leading Diagonal candidate.  Wave 5 or C → Ending Diagonal candidate. This is the question that decides the type.

Does the internal structure match?
Leading: 5-3-5-3-5. Ending: 3-3-3-3-3. If the subdivision contradicts the position, re-check both before committing to a label.

Do secondary clues support it?
For an Ending Diagonal: fading volume, a possible throw-over, signs of trend exhaustion. These support a count built on structure. They never replace it.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Rejecting a diagonal because Wave 4 overlaps Wave 1.
That overlap is expected in a diagonal. It is evidence for the pattern, not against it.
Calling every wedge a diagonal.
Shape alone is not enough. The position and the internal subdivision have to fit as well.
Assuming every Ending Diagonal must have a throw-over.
A throw-over is common, not mandatory. Its absence does not invalidate the pattern.
Confusing an Ending Diagonal with a Leading Diagonal because they look alike.
They do look alike. Check where the pattern sits in the larger wave structure — that is what separates them.
Memorising 5-3-5-3-5 without knowing what it counts.
The numbers describe the smaller waves inside each of the five main waves. Understand the mapping and you will not need to memorise it.

Positions 2, 3, 4 and B require a standard structure. Diagonal-like sub-structures inside a complex B wave are occasionally debated, but they are not the pattern this guide covers.
